Abstract: A remote measurement method developed for profiling longitudinal thickness under ice jams has been modified to obtain in situ temperature profiles of breakup jams and to record the rapidly changing water levels during the passage of a surge caused by the release of an ice jam. Following descriptions of the operational features of these methods, examples of data obtained to date are discussed. Limitations and possible improvements are outlined.
