Abstract: The area of the Bohai Sea and its coastal regions are one of the important economical areas in China. Annual freezing of sea and drifting of the ice have a substantial effect on the winter. navigation, oil field exploitation, etc. The whole Bohai Sea was almost full covered with ice in February-March 1969. Drilling platforms was broken down by sea ice and the loss was sever. The observation, forecast and research on the Sea ice are very important. Since 1969, forecast and research for the sea ice have been carried out in the National Research Center for Marine Environmental Forecasts (NRCMEF) of China. So far, in NRCMEF, empirical-statistical schemes have been traditionally used for operational ten-days and month ice range forecast, and numerical forecast of sea ice has been going on for eight winters since 1990.
