Abstract: This paper presents the application of a discrete element technique to the study of the dynamic in-plane interaction between moving ice floes and stationary structures. Despite the complexity of the interaction problem, it is recognized that the interaction can result in two distinct modes of failure of the ice floe; namely either splitting of the ice floe or the crushing of the floe at the contact zone. The discrete element scheme which incorporates viscoplastic effects in the fragmented floe is used to study the dynamic interaction problem. The time-dependent variations of the interacti ve stresses between ice floes and structures are also established.
