Abstract: Experimentally determined statistical characteristics of deformation induced cracks in transverse isotropic columnar-grain ice are applied to measurements on strength. Information is given on the strain, strain rate and grain size dependence of the total crack density and logarithmic mean crack length for grain sizes less than and greater than 5 mm. Estimates are made of the strain rate dependent crack density at yield and failure for ice of grain size less than 5 mm and temperature of -10°C. Some implications for the incorporation of crack damage into rheological models for ice are considered.
