Abstract: Damage mechanics approach for large scale modeling of sea ice cover is developed. Ice cover considered as a granular material with a variable size of granules. A scalar damage parameter is proportional to the full area of ice floes, floating on unity area of the ocean surface. The law of full and kinetic energy conservation and the second thermodynamic law are considered for ice cover. The equation for the damage evolution follows from thermodynamic laws and dissipation in the system under consideration.
