Abstract: The northern part of Japan is in the subarctic zone. The major cities have 2-3m deep snow during winter. Snow on the roads is collected and transported to dump yards. Snow flow gutters are one of means of snow transportation. However, they often have operational problems such as snow jamming. In this report, we analyze the mechanism of snow jamming in gutters to estimate the capacity of the gutters. Our theoretical estimations compared favorably with the snow transportation capacity observed in experiments made by the Civil Engineering Research Institute, Hokkaido Development Bureau.
