Abstract: The west route water transfer projects include drawing water from three reaches of the Tongtian, Yalun and Dadu River, all upper tributaries of the Yangtze River, into the Yellow River with annual transferring water volumes of 10,5 and 5 billion m3 respectively. The routes pass through the plateau sub-frigid zones where have long severe winter. According to experiences of some hydropower projects constructed in the plateau cold areas at home and abroad at present, as well as analysis of heat balance of water body, the primary features of ice conditions along the routes are sum up under different modes of water transfer (gravity flow or pumping water) and different channel structure systems (open channel or tunnel). From the viewpoints of transferring water in winter with ice and considering the planning provisions, the following layout of the diversion works are suggested: drawing water fonn the depth of reservoir (or regulating ponds), channeling water through long tunnel with facilities keeping out cold air at intake and outlet of tunnel, maintaining larger capacity of regulating pond or adopting narrow-deep pattern.
