Abstract: In the early 1980s three key research projects on field measurements of multi-year ice impact forces were carried out at Hans Island. The results of these measurements have been widely used and discussed in the literature. With hindsight and fourteen more years of experience in Arctic marine drilling, the three Hans Island projects are reviewed, concentrating on the main results ofthe projects, and on additional observations and analyses of the Hans Island data.
