Abstract: An extensive systematic series test with icebreaking tanker and LNG carrier models has long been performed at the ice tank and the towing tank of the Ship Research Institute, Japan. Resistance and propulsion tests with the models in level ice, broken ice and simplified ridges and in calm water and waves as well were carried out, to obtain technical data and information to be necessary for design of large icebreaking commercial vessels and also to understand icebreaking phenomena around ship hulls and ice/propeller interactions. In this paper some results of the model tests in ice, in particular, on the effects of parallel body, are presented as the first report of the research program of the extensive series tests.
