Abstract: Investigations into the root cause of stable macrocracking (larger cracks that are arrested before they propagate to a free surface) has lead to a simple yet unique explanation for one of the causes of stable macrocracking in ice. This explanation leads to a possible criterion for defining when the crushing with extrusion failure and clearing modes will occur. Such a failure and clearing mode has been associated with the maximum loads recorded on Gulfs Molikpaq (mobile offshore drilling structure) in the Beaufort Sea.
