The Flow Properties of Crushed Ice: Experimental Observation and Apparatus

Abstract: A laboratory test program was conducted which squeezed a 100 mm thick layer of crushed fresh water ice with density 550 kg/m3 from between 508 by 762 mm plattens at speeds ranging from 2.5 to 160 mm/s. The total load and local pressures were recorded along with post-test measurements of local density and material flow patterns. Below about 2 MPa pressure the material is consistent with a MohrCoulomb description. At pressures greater than 5 MPa it may be better described in terms of a viscous fluid model. This paper describes the experimental arrangement plus the results of the preliminary analysis of the data.
