Abstract: Based on the prototype observation information for ten years at Hequ section of the Yellow River (Hequ County, Shanxi Province, China), the authors consider that the bed transformation on winter season result from effect of ice jam on bed load movement. The ice jam changes flow conditions and forces main flow from surface to bottom. The thicker the ice jam, the higher near-bottom velocity. Hequ section of the Yellow River is located in a frigid zone of northern China. In winter the sediment concentration in the Yellow River should approach zero because the runoff does not carry the sediment and winddriven sediment hardly enter the flow due to existence of the ice cover. But the ice jam changed the conditions, affected bed load movement, and resulted in large bed transformation during that time.
