Abstract: The lower Restigouche River is a medium-sized steep stream, subjected to severe winters and single freeze up-breakup sequences each year. Thermal and mechanical breakups occur with equal frequency. Using past records and in situ observations, a criterion has been formulated to forecast the onset of mechanical events. Their severity can only be predicted in terms of an upper limit. Applications of a numerical model to measured ice jam profiles indicated good performance of the theory and consistency of the model coefficients.
