Abstract: The law of longitudinal and transversal velocity distribution under free water surface and an ice sheet in a curved flume was studied in this paper. Based on these studies, the following conclusions are obtained: 1. In open curved flume, there is only one directional transversal whirling moment in cross section, therefore, the whirling direction of the transverse circulation is the same. 2. When simulated ice sheet forms in a curved flume, there are two different directional transversal whirling moments in cross section, therefore there are two opposite directional transverse circulations from surface to bottom of water. Based on the measurements in lab, the law of thickness distribution of frazil ice jam in a curved flume was studied, the influence exerted by water velocity, water depth and ice discharge on the variation of ice jam thickness was also analyzed.
