Abstract: The crushing of sea ice against a fixed structure is viewed as a stochastic process in time and in space. The variations in stress level are ascribed to the unstable propagation of cracks that have grown under the influence of damage. In the framework of a typical indentation problem, two stochastic variables are examined: the stress at which a crack in a Poisson-field of cracks reaches a critical damage level, and the location of the failure event which determines the size of the material failed and expelled.
