Abstract: Based on the experimental evidence of cross-slip of dislocations in ice crystals, the plasticity of ice is discussed in terms of interaction between the basal and non-basal dislocations. Crack tip deformation in ice crystals is demonstrated by the dislocation pile-ups in front of a cleavage crack and a dislocation-free zone caused by the movement of existing dislocations in the vicinity of a crack tip of a specimen subjected to creep.
