Abstract: A basic desire from power companies is that a cold climate should not restrict the operation of power stations, such as, for example, the full use of the peak power capacity. A necessary requirement is also to maintain the manoeuvrability of spillway gates. This paper is the written version of a keynote speech at the ice symposium in Banff. The lecture is mainly based on the author's experience of ice problems and ice research in Sweden and is presented along the following lines: - Winter regime in unexploited rivers compared to rivers developed for hydro power. - Ice problems and mitigation methods related to hydro power. - Research needed to meet the role of hydro power today and tomorrow.
