Abstract: Sanjiangyuan region is the birthplace of Yangtze River, Yellow River and Lancang River, which is known as the Chinese water tower. Its unique natural geographical and ecological system features are of great significance to ecological stability of China and even to the whole world. In this study, according to the eco-hydrological problems in alpine, high altitude and large scale area, the eco-hydrological model of Sanjiangyuan Region was established whereby the multiple effects of topography, glaciers and permafrost, climate change and human activities were considered. It was used to simulate the eco-hydrological process under different ecological protection scenarios. The results showed that, the water conservation capacity and the dry season runoff significantly increased, and the flood season runoff decreased. Compared with the time prior to the undertaking of protective measures, the dry season runoff increased 0. 09 billion m3 and the flood runoff decreased 0. 262 billion m3 under the first phase of the protection planning scenarios. Moreover, the dry season runoff increased 0. 3 billion m3 and the flood runoff decreased 0. 527 billion m3 under the second phase of the protection planning scenarios
