On the Relevance of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics to Ice

Abstract: A new criterion is proposed which allows one to estimate the minimum size for a brittle poly­crystalline fracture specimen comprised of a small number of grains. According to this criterion, linear elastic fracture mechanics is a useful theory for fresh water ice but may have limited use for saline ice.
