Abstract: The first results and initial data analysis of the failure strain, the elastic, delayed-elastic and viscous components of failure strain, and strain rate and physical property effects during constant strain rate uniaxial compression of superimposed ice specimens from Hobson's Choice ice island are presented. Failure strain and time to failure are strain rate dependent, particularly at the lower strain rates. Analysis of the components of failure strain during deformation indicate that this is related to the dominant role of viscous flow at strain rate =1x10-5 s-1, but inversely related to those properties at strain rate <=2X10-6 s-1. The physical-structural property effects at the low strain rates may reflect a balance between initial specimen compaction by bubble contraction, and the release of the stored elastic energy by micro-crack growth at crystal boundaries and at the walls of the bubbles.
