Abstract: The breakup phenomenon for river ice covers is mainly initiated by longitudinal cracking parallel to the banks. For predicting the longitudinal cracking resulting from integral action of hydrodynamic forces due to rapid changes in water level and structural resistance of the ice cover, a FEM Model has been developed using the finite element stiffness method and based on the analogy of a beam on an elastic foundation. The model assumes elastic response of the ice cover.
