Abstract: The rubble-spray ice island concept is based on the accumulation of ice rubble at the construction site and the use of this mass as the base of spray ice deposit. The key to successful construction of such an island is the formation and retention of stable, relatively immobile, grounded rubble at the construction site. This can be accomplished by installing an obstruction (a structure) in the path of a moving ice sheet and locally raising the sea floor in front of the structure by a subsea berm. This paper examines the principles and methods for building and utilizing ice islands in deep waters of the Beaufort Sea. It also identifies water outstanding technical issues that should be resolved to make deep water islands a reality.
