Abstract: Each small-craft harbor experiencing ice during the winter months must be designed for site specific conditions. These conditions are governed by environmental, geometrical and operational factors. A Harbor Winter Conditions Classification system is proposed as an aid to designers in selecting among choices for the design of docks and other harbor structures. The choice of materials to be used, the type of docks to be built, the location for the dock systems, and the method of operation are all relevant decisions when ice is present. The Harbor Winter Conditions Classification system characterizes ice and winter conditions over a wide spectrum ranging from mild to severe. Input parameters include ice thickness, water level fluctuation, water and air temperatures, winter duration, snowfall, ice sheet confinement and integrity, and miscellaneous site specific conditions. Recommendations on how to obtain site specific data and how to synthesize this information relating the Harbor Winter Conditions Classification system with available design choices is presented.
