Abstract: The role of sea ships carrying cargoes along the North-East passage or the Northern Sea Route (NSR) is traditionally very important to our country. One of the most interesting problems in this sphere is possibility of transit cargo transportation (TCT) along the NSR. We shall try to assess the development options in line with the positive changes in the international setting that paved the way for the six points of a radically new foreign policy in the Arctic proclaimed by M. S. Gorbachev in Murmansk in 1987. The paper deals with technical, economic, political and other aspects of transit cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route.
