Abstract: The impact force, the contact radius and the duration time in the first period of impact are investigated for the case of low-velocity rigid sphere vertical impact on a floating ice sheet. The impact force in the contact area is assumed to be uniformly distributed. The ice sheet behavior is modeled using thin plate theory. By using incompressible potential flow theory, the hydrodynamic reaction is incorporated. The influences of the initial velocity of the impactor, the mass of the impactor, the ratio of the characteristic length to the ice thickness and the ratio of the water depth to the ice thickness are investigated.
