Abstract: A high resolution temperature meter was constructed in order to study freezing and melting. Calibrations and reference measurements with slush, made of snow and water, were performed in laboratory and in situ. The temperature reading of a slush sample is very stable, if the sample is mechanically unperturbed, and well covered against solar radiation. When clapping or stirring slush, the reading always decreases. Mechanical stress obviously loosens molecules from ice crystals and takes them from the solid phase to the liquid phase without bringing a corresponding amount of heat to the system. The temperature reading typically decreases by 5 mK when the sensor rod is moved in "wet" slush. When the rod is moved in "dry" slush, the reading decreases by 20 mK.
