Abstract: The mathematical modelling of the thermal regime of estuaries is discussed on the basis of some experiences from the Skagerrak-Baltic system. The modelling approach divides the water body into sub-basins. The dynamics in each sub-basin are then treated as transient horizontally homogeneous boundary layers with stratification effects caused by vertical gradients in salinity and temperature. The boundary conditions at the air/water interface consider the heat exchange, the wind stress and the ice. In sub-basins with weak interaction to surrounding waters, the horizontal exchange is neglected. In sub-basins with strong interaction, the basins are coupled to each other by parameterized flows of water volume, salt and heat.
