Abstract: The subject of ice jams and breakup is briefly reviewed from an engineering and North American perspective. Items discussed include design for ice jams, flood frequency analysis, flood forecasting, mitigation and emergency measures. The point is made that ice jams are a natural part of the break-up process and that a real need is for a better understanding of break-up.
