Abstract: The paper deals with the conditions for formation of ice dam on the lower reaches of the Songhua River in area of high latitude and low temperature, leading up to thick ice cover. Jamming of different types are treated of, together with the boundary conditions of the river for the formation of ice dam. A brief account of the hydraulics and thermal conditions is also given, on the basis of which parameters for computation may be chosen and formula for forecasting of ice dam formation has been derived, the results of computations agreeing closely with the observed data.
