Abstract: The problem of ice resistance has not been resolved adequately (neither quantitatively, nor qualitatively) for a long time. At the initial stages of icebreaker performance investigations the emphasis was on the total ice resistance, empiric relationships such as [equation] were determined on the basis of experiments. These relationships allowed the icebreaker performance to be predicted and their ice navigability to be compared. Their usefulness, however, was limited to the ships with conventional hull shapes as well as by power and dimension ranges included in the regression analysis.
