Abstract: Although a borehole dilatometer test for deformation modulus determination of soils was first developed in Germany in the 1930-s (Kogler, 1933), its more general use in soil mechanics started only in the 1950s, after the introduction of the Menard pressuremeter system (Menard, 1957). The original Menard pressuremeter consists of an inflatable probe composed of two coaxial cells and a pressure-volume control device that permits a given pressure to be applied to the wall of the borehole and the volume increase of the hole to be measured.
