Abstract: Some current environmental problems are outlined and examined in the prospective of previous environmental impacts and natural variations. The nature and utility of studies undertaken to resolve environmental issues are discussed and the need for more in-depth studies with sharper focus is stressed. The northern people must participate in the resolution of northern environmental problems being involved in identifying study needs and in carrying out the studies. A phased approach towards northern development is favored.
