Abstract: A series of uni- and multiaxial compressive strength tests on saline ice, which was frozen in the laboratory under simulated natural conditions, was conducted on an electronically controlled triaxial closed-loop testing machine with brush-type loading platens. The brush-type loading platens were specially designed for ice and provided a very low transverse strain restriction combined with a high stiffness in the loading direction. Tests were carried out with a constant strain rate within the probe parallel to the main loading axis while the other two axes were kept stress controlled to maintain a constant stress ratio between the three axes. Twenty-two stress ratios were investigated considering the anisotropy of the columnar-grained saline ice while the strain rate, temperature and salinity were kept constant.
