Abstract: These lecture notes were the basis of an invited lecture held as an introduction to the Sessions on Thermal Regime of Ice Covered Waters at the IAHR Symposium on Tee Problems, Lulea, August 1978. The lecture centered on aspects of heat transfer between water and air. Problems of frazil ice, ice cover formation and hydraulic friction of ice covers were briefly discussed and reviewed. As regards ice cover deterioration, it was noted that our knowledge is very limited. Finally, a brief mention was made of man-made chances in the thermal regime.
