Abstract: Ontario Hydro is investigating, as an International Hydrologic Decade project, the formation and action of ice in the upper Niagara River with special reference to anchor ice and other underwater ice forms. Such ice at times causes a considerable reduction in the flow of the river and a corresponding reduction in hydro-electric power production. The Meteorological Branch (Department of Transport, Canada) is also investigating the energy balance of the same reach of river and its relation to the production of surface ice in particular. Instrumentation for both projects is essentially similar and the two entities were able to coordinate their requirements. Only a note mentioning the location of meteorological instruments provided by the Meteorological Branch is given here since a description of these has been given elsewhere. This paper chiefly concerns itself with a survey of the instruments used to measure and record water temperature and equipment to facilitate the observation of frazil and anchor ice in the natural water environment.
