Abstract: Considered is the possibility of forecasting maximum stages due to ice jam formation at locations in the backwater of repeatedly occurring ice jams. The relation between the maximum water stage due to ice jams at the location considered and the maximum daily rate of water stage rise upstream is shown to be very strict and to lead to a timely (several days in advance) prediction of the maximum water stage on rivers for which sufficiently comprehensive long-term data are available (e. g. the Dniester).
