Abstract: The thrust exerted by the thermal expansion of ice covers on hydraulic structures are still unknown. Up to now, research is not conclusive and the suggested values cannot be scientifically accepted because they should take into account the crystallographic structures and the optical orientations of the different types of ice formed in nature. This paper presents the state of the art of this question followed by a description of the actual research under way at Universite Laval.
