Abstract: Growing energy consumption and dwindling reserves in the populated regions is spurring the search for oil in the frontier areas of the far North. This paper describes the work sponsored by several Canadian oil companies aimed at providing ice strength data for the design of offshore structures for Arctic waters. The design and operation of a novel ice testing device is described. Some of the results obtained during tests in January and February of 1970 are presented and discussed.
