Abstract: The city of Kuching, Sarawak and its adjacent areas have been experiencing frequent flooding, causing hardship to the local population and significant damages to the economy. A new barrage was proposed, to be located upstream of the Sarawak river, designed to regulate flow into Sarawak river and divert excess flows into adjacent flood bypass thereby preventing flooding in the city. The main objective of this study comprised of development of physical model to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed flood mitigation options focusing on verifying discharge capacity of the designed barrage and also the scour protection of the structure. The model of the barrage comprises of two radial gates, a ship lock and representative sections of upstream and downstream channel of the gates. A scale of 1:50 was chosen for optimum configuration. Simulations were performed for 3 test scenarios with various combinations of water levels, discharges and gate opening combinations to investigate effects of the varied flow conditions and potential scour. Based on scenarios tested, it was anticipated that the barrage and lock structures will be able to withstand the design discharge capacity. Moreover, rough boundaries as adopted in the design are effective in dissipating flow energy and may not cause significant damage to its scour protection or erosion to the downstream channel.
