Effects of Vegetation Roughness Ratio on the Spanwise Distribution of Suspended Load

Abstract: This study investigates the effects of the Roughness Ratio (RR) on suspended load transport in a simplified straight channel partially covered with rigid submerged vegetation by using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) coupled with the Discrete Phase Method (DPM). The Probability Density Function (PDF) and its variance are used to evaluate the distribution of particles and their non-uniformity in the temporal-spatial region. The findings reveal that the spanwise distribution of particles in the upstream region of vegetation patch was little affected by the RR conditions. The minimal value of PDFs of all cases decreases with the rise of RR in the diverging flow region. The spanwise non-uniformity of the PDFs for high RR cases No. 4 (RR=80%) is higher than that of submerged cases No. 1~2 (RR=20% and 40%) in the vegetation-side mixing layer of the developing region, while the minimum value of the spanwise PDF decreases in the non-vegetated region (1
