Abstract: Sedimentation in the reservoir influences flood control, hydropower generation, reservoir lifetime and ecosystems. This study investigated the characteristics of water, sediment and sedimentation in Xiluodu Reservoir (XLD) based on measured flow, sediment and topographic data. The results indicate from 1959 to 2019, the incoming water discharge of XLD reservior did not increase or decrease significantly, but the incoming sediment discharge was reduced to a great degree. The annual average sediment transport from 2015 to 2019 was 81.08 million tons, 52.1% less than that from 1959 to 2014. Since the XLD was put into operation, the annual sediment discharge is only 2.49 million tons, 98% less than the yearly mean level before the operation, and XLD has intercepted a large amount of sediment. The sedimentation of XLD is concentrated in the perennial backwater area, and the deposited amount accounts for more than 83.2% of the total deposited amount. The measured topographic results indicated that the submerged bars of the channel have an obvious barrier effects on the sedimentation development process in the reservoir. The results of this study provide a scientific basis for the water and sediment management of Xiluodu Reservoir.
