Abstract: This paper advocates the need for a pro-active approach to hydro-meteorological data collection to support the design of urban drainage infrastructure. Currently, many urban drainage investment projects financed by the World Bank show severe shortcomings in hydro-meteorological data availability for the calibration of hydrological-hydrodynamic models, supporting the study of necessary and cost-efficient investments. This paper addresses practical limitations in providing such data by using routinely applied techniques (though yet hardly applied in the field of urban drainage system design), such as the installation of water level sensors, velocity sensors and the use of ADCP, as well as devices to monitor rainfall. This leads to the need for further advances in sensor technologies, which are available at lower cost, easier to install and less demanding in maintenance. Finally, this paper addresses two examples of recently developed sensor technologies, which already have demonstrated their practical value and deserve encouragement for further research and application in the real world of urban drainage design.
