Abstract: The hydraulic capacity of rivers can be significantly impacted by an increase in sediment supply, leading to a higher probability of flooding. Land use change has been identified as a primary factor in the increase of soil erosion. In this study, we examine the fluvial system of the Sierra rivers located in the lowlands of the Grijalva River catchment in Mexico to identify trends in sediment supply and land use change. To achieve this, an analysis of data from gauging stations that measured sediment supply, and historical records of land use change in the area was performed. The analysis revealed a notable upward trend in sediment supply and a significant land use change, where rainforest was converted into grasslands and croplands. Furthermore, historical information confirms the recurrence off loods in the region.
