Abstract: In this study, a numerical model of the tank drainage was established by OpenFOAM, and the draining processes under fully ventilated (tank top fully open) and fully sealed (tank top sealed) conditions were simulated, with both circular and elliptical bottom orifices having the same area. Based on the numerical simulation, the growth processes of bubbles at the tank bottom orifices of both circular and elliptical shapes under fully sealed conditions were presented, and the corresponding outflow features were analyzed. Combining the pressure variation at the bottom, the mechanism of bubble generation during the drainage process was revealed, and the reason for different bubble morphology under different orifice shapes was discussed. Additionally, the water velocity distribution and flowline accompanying the bubble development were simulated to further demonstrate the characteristics of air-water two-phase flow during the tank drainage process.
