Abstract: Adjusting raw water pH by injecting CO2 into raw water transfer pipelines is an emerging treatment method for water plants, offering the advantages of strong stability, safety and effective removal of organic matter from water. In this paper, the mass transfer process of CO2 bubbles in horizontal pipe flow is investigated. In the experiments, different working conditions were created by adjusting the pipeline water flow rate and CO2 injection rate. In all cases, a large air pocket was formed at the top of the pipe by the injected CO2. The variation of the bubbles volume with CO2 injection and the corresponding pH change of the water were recorded. The mass transfer coefficients of CO2 bubbles were calculated for each test. The experimental results show that the injection of CO2 can effectively regulate the pH of the water flow. The mass transfer coefficient of CO2 bubbles increases with the ratio of CO2 injection rate to the pipe flow rate while decreases with the decrease of bubbles volume. The results of this paper is beneficial to better understand of the mass transfer characteristics of bubbles in pipe flow.
