Abstract: The design of bottom outlet stilling basins is very sensitive, the variation of some parameters such as the water level can significantly modify the hydraulic behaviour and the dissipation of energy. When the exit of the bottom outlet leading to the stilling basin is submerged during flood events, most of the energy is dissipated with the interaction between the high velocity main flow and the existing steady water in the stilling basin. The use of numerical models and visualization tools allows for a detailed study of this interaction and the design of advanced solutions. Nevertheless, physical models are always needed to ensure that the results of the numerical model are appropriate. In this paper the study of the solution adopted for the Ebro Dam (Spain) is presented.
