Experimental Investigation of Settling Velocity Change of Microplastics in Turbulent Flow

Abstract: To predict the behavior of the microplastics (MPs) in rivers or lakes, such as where they are accumulated and transported, is a matter of significant concern, particularly in the context of water quality control. To this end, the settling velocities of MPs and corresponding transport distance in natural water bodies should be investigated for accurate predictions using numerical models. Some of existing particle tracking models (PTMs) adopt the settling velocities of particles as a model parameter, typically relying on empirical equations designed for the still-water conditions, while turbulence effects by fluids is considered as the random walk term (Jalon-Rojas et al., 2019). Nonetheless, numerous studies have reported that the settling velocity of inertial particles in turbulent flow differs from that in still-water conditions. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the relationship between turbulence and the settling velocity of MPs in turbulent flow to enable more accurate predictions of particle transport. Furthermore, the influence of ambient fluid velocity on settling velocity, also considered in calculations for transport velocity of particles in PTMs, have been examined through the experimental facility.
