Abstract: This study presents performance measurements and wake data for two experimental horizontal axis hydrokinetic turbines. Despite some variation in the power and thrust force between the two prototypes, the wake characteristics were essentially identical, indicating flow condition factors exerted greater influence over wake structure than specific details of device geometry in this case. To further investigate this, a comparative analysis was made with several literature sources, determining that vertical blockage percentage, depth- and diameter-based Reynolds numbers were the most significant factors in determining wake recovery distance.
