Abstract: Large-eddy simulations (LES) of open-channel flow over spanwise heterogeneous surfaces, where the smooth channel is roughened using streamwise-oriented rectangular ridges have been performed. Such roughness has been observed frequently in natural streams and rivers with mobile beds, typically composed of sand and/or gravel. Such ridges introduce secondary currents of Prandtl's second kind, characterised by upflow above the ridges and downflow in the troughs between the ridges. Whilst these features are manifested in the time-averaged flow, meandering of secondary currents is a common feature of the instantaneous flow. This study's objective is to quantify the impact of mentioned meandering on water surface deformations.
