Abstract: Favre waves are weakly dispersive and nonlinear waves and appear during sluice gate operations at low-head hydro power plants. They can have significant amplitudes compared with traditional hydraulic jumps and propagate over several kilometers, leading to flooding risks. The present work aims to validate the numerical Boussinesq-type model presented at the 40th IARH World Congress (Jouy et al., 2023) with updated laboratory data on Favre waves propagation. Our experiments allowed us investigating some features of Favre waves that were not considered by Favre (1935) and Treske (1994), like time dependence of the characteristic wavelength.
